Funderburk Scores First Collegiate Goal, Davidson Cruises To 5-0 SoCon Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. –– Sophomore Sophie Funderburk (Wilmington, N.C.) led the Wildcat women's soccer team to a season-high five goals with her first-ever collegiate score, while fellow sophomore Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) struck again as Davidson picked up a 5-0 shutout win over The Citadel on the road Sunday afternoon.
Davidson ran its winning streak to a season-best five straight to improve to 6-3-0 overall and start Southern Conference play 2-0 for the third time in the past four years. The Wildcats also won their seventh straight against its SoCon foe. The Bulldogs' two-game winning streak came to an end as they fell to 3-7-0 and 0-2 in league play.
The five goals gave Davidson 15 goals in the past five games after scoring only two in the first four games of the season.
It was an extra special day for Funderburk, who celebrated a birthday on the same day she scored her first-ever Wildcat goal. The sophomore scored the Wildcats' third goal when she found herself alone about 25 yards out and ripped a shot into the upper-left corner of the goal past Bulldog goalkeeper Britni Bunnell for a 3-0 Davidson advantage.
Also adding their first collegiate goals for the Wildcats, and the team's fourth and fifth scores of the day, was junior Kate McCormick (Pelham, N.Y.) and freshman Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.). Elswick scored her first career goal after rebounding her own deflected shot and placing it past the Bulldog goalie.
McCormick capped off Davidson's offensive outburst with a strike outside the 18-yard box that then hit the inside corner of the crossbar and dropped into the goal for the final score of 5-0.
Davidson and The Citadel played nearly 38 minutes of scoreless soccer until the 39th minute when Conner received a cross from sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) in the six-yard box and connected for her team-leading fifth score of the season and a 1-0 Wildcat lead. Conner has had a hand in five of the Wildcats' last 15 goals, accounting for four goals and an assist.
In the 53rd minute of play, senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) found freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas), who headed in the corner kick as Davidson grabbed a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats finished the contest with 10 corner kicks.
Davidson out-shot The Citadel 27-1, with 11 of those shots coming on goal.
Senior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) registered her third shutout of the season and moved into fourth place all-time with 14 career shutouts.
Davidson remains on the road when it travels to Greenville, S.C. to play Furman on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
