DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Riding a three-game winning streak and coming off two of the program's biggest wins in recent history, the Davidson women's soccer team is looking to keep the momentum going when it opens up Southern Conference play by hosting Appalachian State on Thursday.
The Matchup
The Davidson Wildcats host the Appalachian State Mountaineers, Thurs., Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. on the field of Alumni Stadium.
The All-Time Series
Davidson has dominated the all-time series over App. State, leading 16-1-2. ASU ended the Wildcats 18-game unbeaten streak against them with a 1-0 win in Boone, N.C.
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wildcats are carrying a lot of momentum after sweeping through two Southeastern Conference schools to capture the College of Charleston Tournament title last weekend. Friday night saw sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) take a corner kick from senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) and head in the game-winning goal at the 98:19 mark of overtime for Davidson's first-ever win against Vanderbilt. Then on Sunday against an LSU team who was one of just 12 teams nationally still undefeated and were on a school-best tying 10-game unbeaten streak, the Wildcats proceeded to shut out the Tigers, 3-0, on their way to capturing the tournament title.
Sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) led the offensive charge over the weekend with her team-leading third and fourth goals of the season. For her accomplishments, Bye-Nagel was honored with the SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday. She has scored a goal in three straight contests.
Right behind Bye-Nagel in scoring is fellow sophomore Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who is having an outstanding second year. She picked up an assist and goal over the weekend to push her season totals to three goals, one assist and seven points.
Davidson's 3-0 shutout win over LSU was the team's second of the season and 21st in the past three years. Senior tri-captain Haskell commanded the defensive efforts over the weekend, resulting in a spot on the Soccer Buzz magazine Elite Feet National Team of the Week on Tuesday. It's the third straight year a Wildcat has earned a nod on the 11-member weekly team.
Senior tri-captain Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) is second in the conference with 45 saves and has a 1.39 goals against average.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is off to a school best 5-0-2 start after a 3-0 win over VMI last Saturday. The Mountaineers are riding a seven-match unbeaten streak, which ties the longest in school history. They have allowed just one goal in their seven games this year, a 2-1 win over Charleston Southern.
Eight players in all have found the back of the net, led by the duo of Casey Cleary and Stephanie Balzano with two goals apiece.
Caroline Clarke and Emma White have split time between the posts, starting three games each. They are first and second in goals against average in the league and have combined for 33 saves.
Next Up
Davidson continues SoCon play with a trip to The Citadel on Sunday, Sept. 30 with gametime set 2 p.m.
