DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The Davidson women's soccer team added yet another individual honor after an outstanding weekend of sweeping two Southeastern Conference schools with senior tri-captain Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) earning a spot on the 11-member Soccer Buzz magazine's Elite Feet National Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
It marked the third straight year Davidson has placed a player on the weekly team and just the third time in program history. Sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and 2006 grad. Kara Koehrn have also earned the honors.
Haskell helped Davidson take home the College of Charleston Tournament title with a 2-1 overtime win over Vanderbilt on Friday and then a 3-0 shutout victory over previously unbeaten LSU on Sunday. The wins over the Commodores and the Tigers were the program's first-ever, and marked the third and fourth time Davidson has defeated a school from the SEC.
The senior had a hand in the game-winning goal on Friday evening against Vanderbilt. Davidson drew a corner kick where Haskell was called on to take the kick. She sent a nicely placed ball into the six-yard box and sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) raised above the Commodore defenders to take the ball in the air with a header to score the game-winning goal and the first score of the season for the sophomore.
The assist was Haskell's sixth of her career and her 10th career point overall.
A two-time All-Southern Conference first team member on defense the last two years, Haskell then commanded a backline that blanked LSU, breaking the Tigers school-best tying 10-game unbeaten streak. The shutout was Davidson's second of the season and the 21st over the past three years.
Davidson will carry a three-game winning streak into league play when it opens up the SoCon slate of its schedule with a matchup against Appalachian State on Thursday, Sept. 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
"We are very proud of what the girls accomplished together this past weekend against two SEC opponents, but must refocus on the task ahead, namely a very competitive SoCon slate starting with App. State this Thursday," said head coach Greg Ashton.
