DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Assisting Davidson to two of the program's biggest wins ever over the weekend, sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for women's soccer for the week of Sept. 18-25. It was the first weekly award for the Wildcats this year and the first ever for Bye-Nagel.
"This is a nice, well-deserved recognition for Kyri, who, like each of her teammates, has been working very hard towards our goals and continued development," said head coach Greg Ashton.
The sophomore forward tallied two goals over the weekend as Davidson took home the College of Charleston Tournament title with wins over Vanderbilt (2-1 overtime) and LSU (3-0). The two goals pushed her season total to a team-best four and she has now scored in three straight contests.
Bye-Nagel's goal on Friday came five minutes into the second half against Vanderbilt. Sophomore Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) sent a cross to Bye-Nagel, who fired in her third goal of the season to tie things up at 1-1.
She then helped Davidson wrap up the two-day tournament with 3-0 shutout win over LSU and the program's first-ever win against the Tigers with an impressive display of speed in the second half.
Using her blazing speed, the sophomore gathered in a ball just across the midfield line and raced past three LSU defenders on her way into the goalie box where she calmly slipped one past Valerie Vogler for her team-leading fourth score of the year and a Wildcat win.
What the made the win even more impressive against LSU was the Tigers had a school-best tying 10-game unbeaten streak coming into the contest and were one of only 12 teams nationally still unbeaten in 2007. In addition, they were ranked eighth in the latest Central Regional poll according to soccerbuzz.com.
Bye-Nagel has been a big part of the turn around offensively for the Wildcats. After getting shutout in back-to-back games two weeks ago and scoring only two goals through their first four games, they have now netted eight goals in the past three games with the sophomore scoring three of those goals.
Davidson will carry a three-game winning streak into league play when it opens up the SoCon slate of its schedule with a matchup against Appalachian State on Thursday, Sept. 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
"We are very proud of what the girls accomplished together this past weekend against two SEC opponents, but must refocus on the task ahead, namely a very competitive SoCon slate starting with App. State this Thursday," said Ashton.
