BOONE, N.C. — Senior Catherine Ransone netted the game-winner in the 56th minute, and the Davidson Wildcat field hockey team posted its third straight NorPac conference victory with a 3-2 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
With the win, Davidson improves to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Mountaineers fall to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in NorPac play.
Junior midfielder Britti Himelfarb put the 'Cats on the board at the eight minute mark, and ASU knotted the score as freshman Caitlin Counts scored on a pass from Nicole Morgan in the 13th minute.
Appalachian would pull ahead, as Counts notched her second goal of the game in the 27th minute on a rebound of teamate Alicia Larkins' shot to give Appalachian the 2-1 go ahead into halftime.
But junior midfielder Sarah Addison evened the score, as she put away an offering from senior forward Kayli Maxwell with under 15 minutes remaining, and 10 minutes later, Ransone's score gave Davidson the 3-2 lead for good.
Davidson outshot the Mountaineers 18-11, including 9-2 in the second period, and took a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore keeper Christa Goeke made five saves in just over 35 minutes, while junior Brittany Rollek had one in 34 shutout minutes. Denise Adams had 14 saves in goal for all 70 minutes for the Mountaineers.
Davidson will ride the momentum into a challenging week, as the 'Cats step out of conference play to host the No. 1-ranked and undefeated University of North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Belk Turf Field and Michigan State on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
