DAVIDSON, N.C. – Kayli Maxwell and Sarah Addison each recorded hat tricks to lead the Davidson field hockey team to a 10-1 win over Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
With the win, Davidson opens the season 2-0, while Mercyhurst falls to 0-2.
With the score tied at 1-1 and 33 minutes remaining, Davidson reeled off nine straight second-half goals for a convincing win. The 'Cats dominated every statistical category, holding a 29-4 advantage on shots and a 17-4 edge on penalty corners.
Sophomore Christa Goeke made three saves in 60 minutes in the goal for the 'Cats, while Jennifer Coleman and Jen Macri split time in the cage for the Lakers.
Maxwell opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the 12th minute, for the only scoring of the first period. The Lakers evened the score just three minutes into the second period, as Emily Warren scored an unassisted goal.
Senior Eleanor Cowley scored what proved to be the game-winner just four minutes later on a penalty corner, with junior Britti Himelfarb and senior Catherine Ransone earning assists.
Senior Jen Willis got involved in the scoring action, pushing the 'Cats lead to 3-1 on a pass from Cowley, and it was all Davidson the rest of the way.
Willis connected with Himelfarb for another goal in the 49th minute, and back-to-back scores from Maxwell extended Davidson's lead to 6-1.
Addison netted her first goal with 54:55 on the scoreboard and added another under a minute later. Willis scored on a penalty corner with help from juniors Misty Stallings and Tyler Kirkland, and Addison scored the 'Cats final goal of the game in the 58th minute.
The 'Cats will return to action next weekend, traveling to Longwood to open NorPac play with Stanford at 7 p.m. Friday and the Lancers at 3 p.m. Saturday.
