Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior forward Kayli Maxwell converted on a penalty stroke in the 86th minute to lift the Davidson Wildcat field hockey team to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Longwood Lancers, the 'Cats first NorPac victory of the season.
With the win, the 'Cats improve to 4-2 and 1-2 in the NorPac, while Longwood falls to 2-8, 1-2 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, the Lancers' Cristin Newbold netted the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute, but senior forward Catherine Ransone answered on a pass from Maxwell with 15 minutes remaining.
Junior forward Sarah Addison put the 'Cats on top just under nine minutes later, with Maxwell again assisting on the score. The 'Cats' defense went to work, but the Lancers were awarded a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock, and Mary Freeman converted to send the game into overtime.
While the regulation period was evenly matched, with Longwood holding a slight 13-12 advantage on shots and 5-4 edge in penalty corners, the same cannot be said of the overtime period. The Lancers got 10 shots and five corners in the first overtime period but failed to convert, while the 'Cats managed just one shot.
Things started going right for the 'Cats in the second overtime period, however, as Davidson was awarded a penalty stroke just 1:20 into the frame after a skirmish in the box. Maxwell took the stroke for the 'Cats and converted, sneaking the ball past Longwood goalie Avanell Schmitz, for the win.
Schmitz finished the game with five saves in 86:20 minutes in goal for the Lancers, while sophomore keeper Christa Goeke turned in another impressive performance for Davidson, netting 12 saves in the same.
Longwood finished with a 23-14 edge in shots, 10-4 on penalty corners.
Davidson will return to action on Sept. 19, traveling to Radford for a NorPac match at 7 p.m.
