DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's soccer team plays host to Mercer on Sunday as the Wildcats return to Alumni Stadium after a two-game trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. last weekend.
The Matchup
The Davidson Wildcats host the Mercer Bears, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. on the field of Alumni Stadium.
The All-Time Series
Mercer leads Davidson 4-0. The two teams have not met since the 1992 season when the Bears defeated the Wildcats 3-1.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson will be looking to halt two streaks against the Bears. First, the Wildcats are looking to get back on the winning path after dropping their previous two contests at Air Force and Colorado College last weekend. Secondly, they are hunting for the program's first-ever series win against Mercer.
Davidson found the program's first trip to the state of Colorado not a pleasant one by any means. Playing Air Force for the first time in program history, the 'Cats were held to two shots and allowed a goal in the 80th minute, falling by the count of 1-0. Then, looking for at least a split on its road trip with a stop at Colorado College, Davidson gave up single goals in the first and second periods to fall 2-0.
Senior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) has done the best she can to keep the Wildcats in contests this year, registering a Southern Conference-best 29 saves as of Sept. 13. With her 11 saves last weekend in Colorado, English moved into sole possession of fifth place all-time in career saves with 168. She has already picked up her 12th career shutout earlier this season and needs one more to move into fifth all-time.
Davidson's two lone goals this year have come off the feet of the sophomore duo of Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany). Both scores were the sophomore's first collegiate goals. Freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) has earned the Wildcats lone assist, helping Conner hit her goal in the overtime win over High Point.
Scouting the Bears
The Bears, who play at Georgia Southern on Friday night, previously hosted their first SEC foe last Sunday, falling 1-0 to Alabama. They opened the year with a draw against UAB before securing their first win with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Jackson State at the LQ Cup.
Like Davidson, Mercer has scored just twice as of Sept. 9 with both scores coming from Courtney Maxey. In goal, Jen Worts sports a 1-2-1 overall record and has started all four games this year. She has pocketed 24 saves and holds a 1.15 goals against average.
Next Up
After its game against Mercer, Davidson hits the road again for its only in-season tournament. The Wildcats will head to play at the College of Charleston Tournament on Sept. 21 & 23, where they will face two Southeastern schools in Vanderbilt and LSU.
