DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Pioneer Football League announced today that Davidson has been picked third in a preseason poll conducted by the league's eight head coaches.
Defending champion San Diego topped the poll (45 pts) and garnered five first-place votes, while Drake (41) was second and had three first-place tallies. Davidson was third (34), followed by Dayton (31), Morehead State (29), Jacksonville (21), Butler (15) and Valparaiso (8).
The Wildcats return 13 starters and 36 lettermen, including the league's second-leading passer a season ago in senior quarterback Ryan Alexander, from a squad that posted a 6-4 overall mark and a 5-2 PFL record. It was the first winning season for Davidson since 2002 and most league wins since winning the 1969 Southern Conference title with a 5-1 record.
Alexander threw for a school-record 2,581 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Two of his favorite three targets, Beaux Jones and Ryan Hubbard, are back for their senior campaigns. All-PFL defensive back Patrick FitzGerald and Matt Easton also return for the 2006 PFL Co-Coach of the Year Tripp Merritt.
Davidson opens its 108th season of football at home against UNC-Pembroke at 7 p.m. Sept. 1. The Wildcats open conference play at Jacksonville Sept. 29, at noon.
