DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College head golf coach Tim Straub fired a 67 at Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst May 21 to advance to the final stage of 2007 U.S. Open Qualifying, which will be held at Woodmont Country Club in Washington D.C. June 4. The U.S. Open field of 156 players is comprised of place-winners in the sectional qualifying rounds and those exempt from both the local and sectional qualifying rounds.
The 2007 U.S. Open will be competed on the 7,355-yard, Par 71 Oakmont Country Club layout in Oakmont, Pa. Oakmont has hosted 19 national championships, including seven U.S. Opens.
“I played solid and made quite a few putts,” commented Straub, who just completed his seventh season at the helm of the Wildcats. “I'm looking forward to another chance at the U.S. Open.”
As a teenager, Straub won the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which is also put on by the United States Golf Association (USGA).
A 1989 graduate of Wake Forest University, one of Straub's crowning achievements as a professional came when he qualified for the 1998 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.
