FLORENCE, S.C. -- Alex Knoll concluded the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Golf Tournament with an even-par 72 to finish tied for second individually as Davidson climbed two spots with a final round seven-over 295 to place eighth in the team standings Tuesday afternoon. The 54-hole event was played on the 7,062-yard, par 72 Country Club of South Carolina layout.
Knoll, a senior from Bethelem, Pa., opened with an even-par 72 Sunday, before climbing six spots up the individual leaderboard with a two-under 70 in his second round to share the overnight lead with Chattanooga's Jonathan Hodge. Both Hodge and Knoll finished with identical 214 (-2) totals, only to be outdone by UNC Greensboro's J.D. Bass (72-73-68=213), who claimed Individual Medalist honors with a four-under 68 to finish one shot clear of the day two co-leaders. Bass, Knoll and Hodges were the only competitors out of 50 to conclude the annual tournament in red figures.
Entering the day at two-under overall, Knoll made the turn at even par and quickly moved to four-under for the event and two-under on the afternoon with an eagle at the 512-yard par-5 second, a hole he played at four-under for the three-day competition. Following the three on his 11th hole, Knoll gave the strokes back with bogeys on two of the next three before playing his final four holes at level par.
The Wildcat co-captain concluded his final campaign with a personal-best 73.5 stroke average, which included 12 rounds of par or better. A 2006 All-American Scholar, Knoll concludes his career with five Top-10 finishes and becomes the highest Davidson finisher in the SoCon Championship since Rusty Boyd was runner-up in 1972 when the tournament was just 36 holes.
Fellow senior Steve Mayo carded a one-over 73, while Michael Saari (T23rd), Ty White (T40th) and David Fowler (49th) each finished with rounds of 75.
Chattanooga claimed its second SoCon team title in school history after firing a three-round total of 864 (293-280-291). The last time the Mocs won the league championship was in 1987 at Raintree Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Georgia Southern held on to its runner-up position with a 873 (+9), while Elon (+18) and Wofford (+21) finished third and fourth, respectively.
The 38th-ranked Mocs will carry the Southern Conference's automatic berth into one of three NCAA regional tournaments, May 17-19. The field for the NCAA East (Alpharetta, Ga.), Central (Sugar Grove, Ill.) and West (Tempe, Ariz.) regional events will be announced on Monday, May 7.
