DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Seniors Alana Vaughn and Alex Eagan each scored a goal in the final game of their careers to help the Davidson lacrosse team to a sixth-straight victory in the Wildcats' perfect April, a 17-16 win over Limestone College on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The white-hot Wildcats finish the 2007 season with a 5-8 record, including a win in an unofficial contest over Navy. The Lady Saints fall to 14-5 with the loss in the high-scoring affair.
Sophomore midfielder Becky Horton, the team's leading scorer all season, scored five goals and an assist to pace the 'Cats, while freshman attacker Haley Cook added three. Sophomore attacker Callie Seymour also tallied three goals and two assists for her first scoring of the season.
I am extremely proud of this team," head coach Betsy Economou said. "We showed continuous improvement throughout the year. We played with passion, energy and teamwork."
The Wildcats dominated for the majority of the game, though the Lady Saints scored the final six goals to keep the season finale interesting. Summer Ferraro, who equaled Horton's offensive output for the Saints, scored two goals in the final minute of the game, the last coming just six seconds on the clock.
Davidson outshot the Lady Saints an impressive 42-28 and grabbed 20 ground balls to Limestone's 10. The 'Cats were an effective 7-of-15 on eight-meters attempts and committed fewer turnovers (26-10) than the Saints. Davidson held a narrow 18-17 edge on draw controls, but Horton and freshman attacker Jen Crawford were dominant, totalling a game-high five apiece.
Junior keeper Laura Johnson allowed just nine goals while making seven saves in 52 minutes of play, while Danielle Tosky gave up all 17 goals against 12 saves in the full 60 minutes in the goal for Limestone.
Limestone made a statement with three straight goals to open play, but the 'Cats came out after a quick timeout and countered the early attack with six straight goals. The teams traded scores for the next four minutes, but the Lady Saints would never get closer than 7-5 in the half.
After Cook and Horton netted three straight goals to move Davidson to a 10-5 lead at the half, Eagan and junior midfielder Emily Palmer opened the second period with back-to-back scores to push the team's lead to 12-5.
Limestone outscored the 'Cats 4-1 over the next 10 minutes, as Horton's fourth goal with 16:42 remaining was sandwiched by a pair of Lady Saints scores, but Seymour's third and final goal with 8:48 remaining kept the Wildcats in control at 14-9.
After Limestone's Lauryn Wise scored the Saint's 10th goal of the game, Davidson answered with three consecutive goals from Horton, junior midfielder Kate McDonald and junior midfielder Sarah Walter, whose goal with 5:28 remaining proved to be the final for the 'Cats. The Lady Saints scored the final six goals but lost their battle with the clock and the game, 17-16.
Davidson finishes the 2007 season with a 5-8 record, and with an official win over Navy, on a six-contest winning streak.
"This team gave me everything I could have asked of them," Economou said. "I enjoyed it immensely and am looking forward to building the program."
