Farmville, Va. – The Davidson Wildcats lacrosse team rode a commanding 4-0 lead all the way to an 18-11 triumph over the Longwood Lancers on Wednesday afternoon to keep their perfect April intact.
Sophomore midfielder Becky Horton scored four goals for the second straight game to pace the 'Cats, who have not lost a game this month, to their fifth straight win. Davidson, who also defeated Navy in an unofficial contest last week, improves to 4-8, while Longwood falls to 3-13.
“It was an awesome game,” head coach Betsy Economou said. “The whole team from top to bottom played well. We are going with the momentum and are putting everything together, which is exciting.”
Freshman midfielder Jen Crawford added three goals for the 'Cats, while freshman attacker Haley Cook, junior midfielder Emily Palmer and senior attacker Alex Eagan each scored twice. Junior keeper Laura Johnson spent all 60 minutes in goal for the 'Cats, tallying a game-high 19 saves.
Cathleen Strain scored four goals to lead the Lancers. Jennifer Holliday started in goal, picking up 10 saves in 40 minutes before getting lifted in favor of Eliza Coughter.
Statistically the game was fairly even, with the Davidson taking a slight 35-34 advantage on shots and a 9-5 edge on ground balls. Longwood won 18 draws compared to Davidson's 13, but the 'Cats committed only 16 turnovers (including just six in the second half) to 20 for the Lancers.
“One of our goals for the game was to have less than 17 turnovers,” Economou said. “It was hot! We just outran them, and we did a good job handling the ball. Our midfielders did a great job in transition, and our defense played a great game.”
Davidson opened play with four straight goals to take a commanding lead. Junior midfielder Emily Diefendorf scored the game's first goal with 28:17 on the clock, and fellow classmate Kelly Finnigan notched the second in the next minute. Palmer pushed the 'Cats lead to 3-0 with her first goal just 38 seconds later.
Junior midfielder Sarah Walter scored the fourth goal with 24:35 left in the first half, before Strain finally put the Lancers on the board a minute later on a successful eight-meters attempt.
Dee Warehime cut Davidson's lead in half with an unassisted score with 23:02 remaining, but the 'Cats answered with five straight goals to halt any chance of a Lancer comeback. Crawford started the scoring streak, converting an eight-meters chance with 21:39 on the clock, and after unassisted goals from Palmer and Horton, scored again with 12:13 left to play in the period. Sophomore midfielder Clare O'Shea added the 'Cats fifth consecutive goal with just over nine minutes remaining to extend Davidson's lead to 9-2.
Longwood rallied for three straight scores, but Crawford posted her third goal of the half with time expired to give the 'Cats a 10-5 break at the half.
Cook scored to open the second half, but Strain answered immediately for Longwood. Cook scored again a few minutes later, and junior midfielder Kate McDonald got involved in the scoring with just under 25 minutes left to play.
After Strain and Christine Comeau scored back-to-back goals for Longwood, Horton went back-to-back for Davidson to push the 'Cats lead to 15-8. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the game, as Longwoods' Lauren Barnaba and Strain traded goals with Eagan and Horton, to finish at 18-11 in favor of Davidson.
Davidson will put its winning streak on the line in its final game of the season, as the 'Cats welcome Limestone to Richardson Stadium on Sat., April 28 for a 2 p.m. game. Seniors Alex Eagan and Alana Vaughn will be honored in pre-game Senior Day ceremonies.
