Momentum Carries Over in Lacrosse's 16-6 Win in Scrimmage at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coming off back-to-back wins, the Davidson Wildcats lacrosse team rode that momentum to a 16-6 victory over Navy in a scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman attacker Haley Cook led the 'Cats with four goals and an assist, while sophomore Becky Horton and freshman Jen Crawford tallied three goals apiece. Horton also led the defense with five ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
“It was a scrimmage for us, but our team dominated ball control of the game,” Davidson head coach Betsy Economou said. “We really dominated on the draw control and on a lot of the possessions of the game, and I thought both of our goalies did a great job. It was great team win for us; everyone contributed today. We got everyone get in the game, except of course, those that are injured, and we look forward to coming back to the area on Sunday to play at Howard.”
Navy, completing its final season at the club level and falling to 12-4 with the loss, was led by Elise Chapdelaine and Mary Ruttum, who both scored a pair of goals.
The 'Cats were dominant in every aspect of the game, taking 33 shots to just Navy's 18. Davidson held a 14-10 edge on draw controls, a 32-28 advantage in ground balls, converted 9-of-10 eight-meter shots and committed fewer turnovers.
Freshman keeper Michelle Pav made the start for Davidson, making five saves in 42 minutes in goal, while junior keeper Laura Johnson posted one in 19 minutes.
Navy's Erin Rawlick opened the scoring in the first minute, as she connected on a pass from Amanda Towey, but three minutes later, Cook's first goal on an assist from Emily Palmer knotted the score.
Chapdelaine answered to give Navy its only lead of the night before Davidson scored seven straight goals to take a dominant 8-2 lead.
Sophomore Callie Seymour started the scoring with 16:47 to go in the first half on an eight-meters attempt, and junior Emily Palmer got into the action a couple of minutes later. After freshman Cheli Bleda pushed the 'Cats edge to 4-2, Horton got her second goal on Palmer's second assist with 11:19 on the clock.
Crawford, junior Emily Diefendorf and Cook also fired off goals for Davidson, before Navy's Mary Ruttum finally busted up the streak with just under two minutes left in the half. Cook assisted on a Horton goal with 1:38 remaining, before scoring her own with 59 seconds left in the first to lift Davidson to a 10-3 lead at the break.
Davidson carried the momentum into the second half, as Crawford got the 'Cats first goal of the period in just 45 seconds. The two teams traded goals for the next ten minutes, until the 'Cats reeled off four straight. Cook's fourth and final goal was sandwiched between Navy goals, before Horton, Diefendorf, Crawford and Seymour completed the Wildcat scoring. Navy's Amanda Towey scored the final goal of the game with 21 seconds left, but Davidson ended with a 16-6 victory nonetheless.
Davidson will return to action and the D.C. area on Sun., April 22 as they travel to Howard.
