DAVIDSON, N.C. –– With the return of 18 letterwinners from a team that finished runner-up during the 2006 regular season in the Southern Conference, the Davidson women's soccer team was picked to finish third this year as voted on by the league coaches, Wednesday, Aug. 22. In addition, the Wildcats placed senior co-captains Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) and Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) on the preseason all-conference team, which consists of 12 student-athletes, 11 of whom earned all-conference accolades in 2006.
UNC Greensboro, the reigning regular season and tournament champions, received eight of the possible 11 first-place votes to grab the top spot in the preseason poll. Furman finished second in the voting and earned two first-place votes, while Davidson garnered one first-place selection and was tabbed to finish third in the league standings. Western Carolina was chosen to finish in fourth, ahead of College of Charleston, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. Elon and Wofford were the eighth and ninth selections, respectively, while Chattanooga and The Citadel rounded out the poll.
The Wildcats wrapped up the 2006 season with an 11-7-2 overall mark and finished with a 7-3 league record. Davidson began its preseason with a matchup against nationally-ranked Clemson on Aug. 21, falling 1-0 at Alumni Stadium. They will host one more preseason game against UNC Wilmington on Saturday and then open up the regular-season on the road at N.C. State on Aug. 31.
Koehrn and Haskell are two of nine starters returning for Davidson from last year's squad. The senior co-captains will be looking to help the Wildcats capture their first championship title since 1996.
Koehrn was one of the Wildcats top scorers last season. She tied for top-team honors in goals (7), assists (3) and points (17) and ranked in the top-10 in the SoCon in both goals and points. For her career, the senior has netted 15 goals and tallied 39 points.
Haskell returns to a Wildcat defense that shut out nine opponents and had a goals-against-average (GAA) of 0.87, both tops in the SoCon. The senior has garnered first-team all-conference accolades the past two years, while earning second-team honors her freshman year. In addition, Haskell became the second Wildcat ever to earn a nod on the NSCAA All-Region Third Team this past season. She also excelled in the classroom, earning a spot on CoSIDA Academic All-District Third Team.
After opening the season at N.C. State, Davidson will play its home opener at Alumni Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. against High Point.
