DAVIDSON, N.C. –– With the return of 18 letterwinners from a team that finished runner-up during the regular season in the Southern Conference, the Davidson women's soccer team will be in the hunt for its second regular-season title in the past three years with the release of the 2007 schedule as announced by head coach Greg Ashton. The Wildcats campaign will feature eight non-conference matches, including battles with two Southeastern Conference schools, along with two preseason home games against UNC Wilmington and Clemson.
“We have once again tried to schedule opponents in the non-conference phase of our season that will test our team and put us in situations that we can find out just what we are made of, ” said head coach Greg Ashton, who sports a 37-21-5 mark in his three years at Davidson. “We expect to be physically challenged by some very talented teams from the SEC, ACC and Conference USA, which will also help to strengthen the mental side of our play.”
The Wildcats, who wrapped up the 2006 season with an 11-7-2 overall mark, start its quest in 2007 with a road game against their first ACC school in N.C.State. It will mark the ninth time the two schools have played, but the first since 2000 when the 'Cats took a 1-0 decision at home.
Following its trip to N.C.State, Davidson opens its home portion of the schedule on Sept. 2 at Alumni Stadium against the High Point Panthers. The Wildcats then hit the state of Colorado for the first time in program history when they travel to take on Air Force and ColoradoCollege, Sept. 7 & 9. The game against Air Force will mark the first meeting between the two schools. Davidson and ColoradoCollege, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season with a 15-6-1 overall record, played to a 2-2 draw in 2005 for their only meeting.
After a home game against Mercer on Sept. 16, Davidson plays its only in-season tournament with a trip to Charleston, S.C., for the College of Charleston Tournament, Sept. 21-23. While there, the Wildcats will battle two SEC schools. The first will be LSU (9-8-3 last year), and then finish up with Vanderbilt, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season and finished with a record of 10-4-7. The game against LSU will be the first for the program, while it has not faced the Commodores since 1993.
Davidson, who finished 7-2-0 last season in the SoCon, will also be in search of their first championship title since 1996 with a slate of SoCon games starting on Sept. 27 at home against Appalachian State. The Wildcats will be looking for a little revenge after seeing the Mountaineers end their 18-game unbeaten conference streak. The Appalachian game starts a string of three straight conference matches and has the Wildcats finishing out the season with 10 of its last 11 contests against SoCon foes.
After traveling to The Citadel and Furman on Sept. 30 and Oct. 4, Davidson hosts four of its last seven conference games at home. Last season saw the 'Cats sport a 6-2 home mark and have gone 17-5-3 during Ashton's three years as head coach. One of the home matches brings regular-season and tournament champion UNC Greensboro to town on Oct. 14. Davidson is looking to turn around its misfortunes over the years against the Spartans as the Wildcats have won only three times in their 21-game series dating back to 1989.
“The Southern Conference has become a very competitive league and by playing a very rigorous non-conference schedule we are optimistic that it will prepare us for an extremely important year in conference play,” said Ashton.
The lone game of the remaining 11 on the schedule that is not a conference game is Davidson's last non-conference contest against Francis Marion on Oct. 7. FMU, a member of the Peach Belt Conference, went 11-5-3 last season and will be facing the Wildcats for the first time ever.
Davidson concludes the regular-season on Nov. 1 with a game against Georgia Southern, who ended the Wildcats' run in the SoCon tournament with a 1-0 upset win at Alumni Stadium in the quarterfinal round.
The Wildcats will be looking to get their fans behind them first-hand when the SoCon Tournament returns to Davidson this year, the first time since the 1996 season. The quarterfinals will again be hosted at the higher seed's home field on Nov. 4, before the tournament moves to Davidson for the semifinal and championship games on Nov. 9-11.
Since 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, Davidson has gone 13-9 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship title three times — 1994, '95 and '96.
