DAVIDSON, N.C. — .Junior Sam Morris (Seattle, Wash.) became the second straight Davidson Wildcat men's track and field athlete in the past two years to earn academic all-district honors after being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as it was announced today. Last season, Jonathan Baker garnered first team honors.
Morris has been apart of the cross country team along with both the indoor and outdoor track teams for the past three years. A captain on the cross country squad this past fall, Morris was one of the Wildcats' top scorers on the trails. He helped lead Davidson to a fourth-place showing at the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships with a career-best time of 26:12.75 in the 8K race. His time was good for 21st place overall and second-best on the team. In 2005, Morris was awarded the Fred Borch Award (coaches award).
Morris was a distance runner for the Wildcats on the track teams this past winter and spring, competing in both the 5000- and 10000-meters. The junior etched his name in the record books during the 2006 outdoor campaign as part of the 4x1500-meter relay team that finished with a school record 16:39.06 at the Clemson Relays.
The three-year runner was recently named one of 22 SoCon student-athletes that were recipients of the second annual Coleman Lew Award. The award recognizes scholar-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 11 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award recipients.
In the classroom, Morris has a 3.48 GPA while majoring in history. Earlier this season the junior was named to the SoCon All-Academic team in both cross country and indoor track.
