Davidson College designated hitter Rob Wilson was selected for the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Atlantic Region Second Team as announced last week. Wilson is the first Wildcat to earn all-region honors since DH Mike DeSimone in 1998.
Wilson, a local product out of Myers Park High School in Charlotte, finished his career with a flourish. Starting as Davidson's DH in 52 of the 53 games, the May graduate finished the season with a .387 batting average, ranking third in the Southern Conference. He ripped 14 doubles and belted seven home runs while driving in 33 and scoring 41 times, plus rapped out 77 hits, the fifth most in a season ever for the Wildcats. His .461 on-base percentage also ranked sixth in the league. For his career, Wilson sported a .331 average, 31 doubles, 16 homers, 84 RBIs, a .402 on-base percentage and an even .500 slugging percentage.
Wilson took home first-team All-Southern Conference honors from the coaches and second-team mention from the media, plus earned all-state status from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association.
Wilson doubled as the Wildcats' ace on the mound as well, posting a 5.71 ERA in 97.2 innings while going 2-10. In those 10 losses, however, he received just 2.6 runs per game from the offense. He finished his career among Davidson's all-time pitching leaders with 72 appearances (third), 49 starts (tied for third), 316.1 innings (fifth) and 238 strikeouts (fourth).
