DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson Wildcats wrestling team placed 11th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Team GPA Rankings, up 14 spots from last season's 25th-place finish.
At the 2007 Southern Conference Championships, head coach Bob Patnesky's Wildcats amassed 34.5 points - the second-highest total in school history, and Davidson wrestler Ben Altman was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year, just the second Wildcat to earn the honor.
Duke University edged Stanford and last year's winner, Brown, with an overall team GPA of 3.3861 to claim the top spot in the top 30. Princeton and the University of Northern Iowa rounded out the top five.
Eligible teams comprise 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. Teams with less than 10 entries filled spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
Missouri's Tyler McCormick had the top GPA among 2007 All-American wrestlers with a 3.95 in Business Management. Fifty-six additional individual wrestlers were also named to the All-Academic Team, representing 38 different schools.
"This is something the NWCA, it's board members and staff are always pleased to announce," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "It's one thing to always talk about how good these guys are on the mat, but we must remember that academics are more important than any particular sport, and it's great to see these programs doing it in the classroom."
