GAINESVILLE, Fla.— The Davidson men's outdoor track and field team concluded its 2007 season with seniors Douglas Noreen and David Ritchie along with junior Beaux Jones representing the Wildcats at the NCAA East Regionals at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track on the campus of the University of Florida over the weekend.
The trio each qualified for the regionals by winning their respective events at the Southern Conference Championships on Apr. 21-22, while making it two years in a row Davidson has sent a track or field member to the regionals. Last year senior Jim Walter qualified in the discus, earning an 18th place finish.
Noreen and Ritchie wrapped up their four-year running careers by running in the 800-meter and the 400-meter hurdles. Noreen, who holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter, finished 25th out of 31 runners with a time of 1:53.03. Ritchie crossed the finish line 29th out of 32 runners in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.67, which he ran in the prelims.
The senior duo leave Davidson holding a combined five individual indoor and outdoor track records, while also taking part in three relays that set school records during their four years.
Jones, in his first year with the Wildcat field team, competed in the javelin and finished with a throw of 168' 9" to earn the best showing of the three Davidson athletes, a 24th place finish out of 27 throwers. He picked up his career best throw at the SoCon Championships when he took the javelin title with a throw of 181' 5", which was only .88 meters from etching his name in the Wildcat record books in the event.
The Wildcats again had another season to remember. Head coach Gary Andrew earned the SoCon Co-coach of the Year award for the second straight season after guiding the men's team to a third place showing at the SoCon Championships. Davidson scored a new school record 104 points, topping the previous best mark set last season by 20 points.
The third-place showing matched the highest finish ever for the program, which was set in 2006 with a third place finish. In addition to those accomplishment was the fact that the Wildcats set six new school records during the outdoor season and had a combined nine runners and field members earn all-conference honors at the SoCon Championships.
