Solid defense like this provided by third baseman Chris FitzPatrick wasn't enough as Davidson was shut out by The Citadel at the Southern Conference Tournament.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The seventh-seeded Citadel Bulldogs used a six-run second inning to eliminate 10th-seeded Davidson, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the 2007 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament at Joe Riley Park. The host Bulldogs now advance to face second-seeded Western Carolina on Wednesday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Wildcats stranded a season-high 16 runners to finish the season with a 19-34 overall record. The Citadel improves to 31-25 in beating Davidson at Joe Riley Park for the 17th consecutive time.
Senior Rob Wilson (2-10) made his final appearance on the mound for the 'Cats, suffering the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits over four innings.
In three of those frames, Wilson never faced more than four batters, but the Citadel got to him for six runs on seven hits in the dreaded big inning to put the Wildcats in an early hole. Citadel catcher Richard Jones started the scoring in the second inning with a two-run shot to right field, and designated hitter Sonny Meade capped it off with an RBI single through the left side. Left fielder Chris Swauger also doubled in a pair of runs before scoring the Bulldogs' final run of the inning.
But the Wildcats certainly had their chances. Davidson hitters collected eight hits -- led by Wilson and left fielder Chase Fitzpatrick with a pair apiece -- and Citadel pitchers combined to walk nine hitters. Davidson, however, went a combined 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position and stranded a season-high 16 on the base paths. In both the third and fourth innings, the first two batters reached safely without scoring, and on three occasions, the leadoff batter was walked and stranded.
The Citadel added the only other run of the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Zach Brown.
Wes Wrenn (5-6) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, tossing six shutout innings. Wrenn allowed seven hits and walked four Wildcats, but used seven punchouts to continually escape trouble.
Davidson Notes: The Wildcats are now 2-26 overall in Joe Riley Park and 6-26 all-time in the SoCon Tournament ... junior reliever Bobby DeMuro tied a school record by pitching in his 33rd game of the season, retiring the only batter he faced to end the eighth ... the Davidson defense did not commit an error for the second straight game and just the 12th time in its 53 contests this season. Its record in those games was 5-7.
