DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson head football coach Tripp Merritt released the names of 21 student-athletes that will play football and be members of the Class of 2011, including nine from the Carolinas. The team will report back to school on August 9 in preparation for the 2007 season.
"This is an outstanding group of student-athletes academically as well as athletically," said Coach Merritt. "They will certainly represent Davidson College very well both on and off the field. As far as football talent, we had a need at the skills positions and defensively at inside and outside linebackers, and we believe we've met those needs. With this group of players, we are continuing to improve our athleticism across the board."
Davidson finished the 2006 season with a 6-4 record, its first winning season since 2002 and second straight year with an improved record under Coach Merritt, the Pioneer Football League's Co-Coach of the Year. In PFL play, the Wildcats went 5-2 to finish third in the eight-team league, their best in conference play since going 5-1 in 1969 when they won their only Southern Conference title. Davidson placed six student-athletes on the all-conference teams as well as six on the academic all-conference squads. Defensive lineman Kyle Kinsell was also selected to the Academic All-America First Team for the second straight year.
