Davidson wrestler Ben Altman was selected by the Southern Conference coaches as the league's Freshman of the Year following the conclusion of the conference championships in Raleigh on March 3. Altman is just the second Wildcat ever to earn the honor since its inception in 1992, joining Miles Miller who took home the award in 1994.
The 125-pounder from Wilmington, Del., enjoyed a terrific rookie campaign with a team-best 26 victories against 14 defeats, including a 3-2 record in league competition. His 49 points earned during dual meets was second only to senior Marcus Boyd on the squad. During the season he placed fifth at the Navy Classic and second in the Davidson Open. He even registered his first pin against Appalachian State on Feb. 7.
Seeded third at the SoCon Championships, Altman did not disappoint, winning three of his four bouts with a technical fall to place third. He was one of five Wildcats to place third at the championships, giving Davidson a total of 34.5 points, the second-most ever in school history. Only the 1967 squad scored better with 56 points and a third-place finish overall.
Three of the five Wildcats that placed third -- Altman, Sam O'Hair and Mike Waters -- all have two or more years of eligibility left, giving Head Coach Bob Patnesky a solid foundation to build his program.
