DAVIDSON, N.C.— Sophomore Will Funderburg (Buford, Ga.) became the second Davidson men's track & field athlete to earn Southern Conference Athlete of the Week honors as announced by the league today.
It was the second week in a row a Wildcat has garnered the honor after senior Jim Walter (Solon, Ohio) earned the honor on Mar. 15 when he broke his own school record in the discus.
Funderburg paced the Wildcats at the Charlotte 49er Classic over the weekend by scoring seventh and 16th place showings in the shot put and discus events. In the shot put event, the sophomore was just 1-3/4 inches from the school record as he finished with a throw of 50' 1-1/4", which was good for seventh at the classic. Funderburg's throw was also a personal-best and currently is tops in the conference by three feet this season.
Funderburg then finished out the classic with a 16th place finish in the discus, earning a throw of 130' 3".
The Wildcats travel to Atlanta, Ga. for the Emory Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 24. They were to also go to the Wake Open on Friday and Saturday, but will not be attending the two-day event.
