PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- In its final two regular-season matches before the Southern Conference Championships, the Davidson wrestling team dropped two contests on the road, falling to Duquesne, 32-12, before finishing the afternoon off with a 34-10 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon at the Palumbo Center on the campus of Duquesne. Davidson closed out the regular season at 6-12, while Duquesne improved to 13-11 overall and UPJ moved to 4-4 against Division I teams and 21-5-1 overall.
In the Wildcats first match against Duquesne, freshman Ben Altman gave them a quick 3-0 lead with a 7-1 decision at 125 pounds over Brett Skonieczny.
Davidson then got a pin by senior Jim Avola when he picked up a pin in 38 seconds over Jayk Cobbs at 141 pounds and the Wildcats had a four-point advantage at 9-5.
It would be the short lived though as the Dukes rattled off three straight wins, two of them pins, at 149, 157 and 165 pounds to regain the lead at 20-9.
Senior Marcus Boyd gave Davidson its final three points with a 10-6 decision over Scott Black at 174 before the Wildcats fell 32-12 to Duquesne.
Davidson's last match of the afternoon saw it earn only three wins in dropping a 34-10 decision to the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown.
Like his previous match, Altman started the contest off with a win by the decision of 7-4 over Scott Morgan to give Davidson a slim 3-0 lead.
Five straight UPJ wins gave the Mountain Cats a commanding 25-3 lead, before Boyd ended the streak with a major decision, 17-6, win over Robert Sakmar at 174 pounds. Mike Waters then earned the Wildcats last win with a 12-11 decision over Patrick Walsh at 197 pounds for the final score of 34-10.
Davidson now gears up for the SoCon Championships, which are on Saturday, Mar. 3 in Raleigh, N.C..
