BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Trailing by a point going into the final bout, Davidson got a 9-3 decision from junior Trebor Clavette at 165 pounds to defeat host Campbell in a dual meet on Tuesday evening, 25-23. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 6-10 on the season, while the Camels lost their ninth straight dual in falling to 2-16-1.
After holding the advantage throughout the meet, Davidson fell behind, 23-22, after forfeiting 157. That brought Clavette to the mat to square off against Brett Poynter to decide the dual. Clavette registered a pair of takedowns in the first period and controlled the match, sending the Wildcats to their third win in their past five meets.
Davidson jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead after three weights. Senior Marcus Boyd dominated at 174, scoring a technical fall, 24-8, but did not record a near fall, garnering four points for the 'Cats. After Sam O'Hair won by forfeit at 184, freshman Mike Waters recorded his second pin of the season, just before the end of the first period.
Campbell humped up in the next three bouts, beginning with a forfeit at heavyweight, then a thrilling overtime decision for Richie Apolinar at 125. Davidson's Ben Altman forced the overtime with a two-point near fall with five seconds left in regulation, but Apolinar needed just 13 seconds in the overtime period to get a takedown for the win. At 133, David Wise picked up a technical fall to get the Camels within two, 16-14.
Senior Jim Avola gave the 'Cats some breathing room with a first-period pin at 141. But Chris Mazzatta earned a 7-1 decision at 149 for Campbell prior to the forfeit at 157, setting up Clavette's heroics at 165.
Davidson has one more dual meet scheduled prior to the Southern Conference Championships. The wildcats will travel to Duquesne to face off against Pitt-Johnstown and the host Dukes on Saturday at 6 p.m. Campbell also travels to Duquesne for a match at 7 p.m. on Friday.
