GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Sam O'Hair is still alive in the 184-pound Wrestleback bracket after the first day of action at the Southern Scuffle Saturday afternoon.
The 10 weight class pairings included seven nationally-ranked teams and a total of 52 ranked individuals, making the Southern Scuffle one of the most competitive in-season tournaments in collegiate wrestling.
O'Hair defeated Dylan Temple from Appalachian State 6-2 in his opener at 184 and suffered a 9-5 setback to top-seeded Rocco Caponi of Virginia in the second round. He will face Michael Moore of Cornell, who came into the tournament as the sixth seed, Sunday.
Freshmen Joe McGinley and Vitaly Radsky along with sophomore Mike Waters were the only Wildcats to post victories besides O'Hair. Radsky won 6-0 over UNCG's Manual Ramirez after losing his first match at 125. He lost to Mike Rodriguez of Cornell in the second round of Wrestlebacks.
Waters lost to second-seeded Hudson Taylor of Maryland 8-1 in his opening match at 197 and defeated Peter Sturgeon of UNCG 5-3 in Wrestlebacks. He then defaulted in the second round to end his weekend.
McGinley and junior Scott Matthews each lost their first match at 149 and were forced to face off in Wrestlebacks. McGinley scored the 6-0 victory but lost to seventh-seeded Clint Sponseller of Kent State in the next round.
Davidson sent three wrestlers into the fray in the 141-pound weight class, but freshman Jack Templeton, sophomore Carl Sandercock and sophomore Ben Thompson each lost their first two matches. It was Templeton's first collegiate action for the Wildcats.
Sophomore Ben Altman lost both his matches at 125, falling 10-6 to Lou Ruland of Maryland in Wrestlebacks. Freshman Alex Radsky lost two matches at 133, suffering 9-0 and 11-2 decisions. Junior Kevin Cook lost two matches at 165 and heavyweight freshman Charlie Wolff lost both of his outings.
Following Sunday's action, Davidson returns to the mat at Clarion for its first dual match of the campaign Jan. 9 at 5 p.m.
