Wildcats Battle, Fall Just Short in SoCon Semifinal Double-Overtime Loss, 1-0
11/9/2007 10:08:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID
DAVIDSON, N.C. – With just 2.6 second left on the game clock of the second overtime, Furman's Rachel Fry headed in a loose ball in the penalty box for the game-winning goal as the second-seeded Davidson women's soccer season came to an end with the 1-0 loss in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson concludes a very successful 2007 campaign at 14-5-1, matching the 1999 and 2005 squads for most wins in a single season. Third-seeded Furman moves to 15-5-1 and will play number one seeded UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the finals.
With time running down in the second overtime, Furman quickly worked the ball down the far side of the field. Then with ten seconds on the clock, the Paladins feed a ball into the penalty box, and after a scramble for it, Fry took the loose ball out of the air and headed it into the back of the net for the 1-0 win with two seconds remaining in double-overtime.
The Wildcats, who outshot Furman, 18-12, got off a combined five shots in both overtimes, but were just never able to capitalize.
Sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) was very close to sending the Wildcat faith crowd home seven minutes into the second overtime. The all-conference first-team pick, had an open look just inside the 18-yard box, but her shot was directed right at Furman's Briana da Mota who made the save. It was one of 10 saves on the night for Mota.
Davidson controlled possession most of the first half, getting off seven shots and placing four of them on goal.
Bye-Nagel had two nice looks in the 53rd and 57th minutes when she just missed an header off a Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) corner kick, and then four minutes later, struck a shot off the crossbar.
The Wildcat defense played exceptional all evening, including coming up with a huge team save in the 79th minute of regulation. Haskell got in front of a Paladin shot in the six-yard box to preserve the 0-0 tie.
Senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) capped off her tremendous senior season between the pipes with six saves. The senior set the Wildcats' career record for shutouts and goals against average, while etching her name atop the single-season school record books with 10 shutouts and a goals against average of 0.81.
The game marked the final one for English, Haskell and Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) in a Wildcat uniform as they leave Davidson as the winningest class at 51-26-6 during their four year careers.
