DAVIDSON, N.C. – Having one of its finest seasons to date at 14-4-1 and a spot in the semifinals, the Davidson women's soccer team was recognized for its great success this year by placing a combined four players on the first and second teams of the SoCon all-league squads as announced at the SoCon Women's Soccer Tournament banquet on Thursday evening on the campus of Davidson College. The Wildcats' senior defender Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) and sophomore forward Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) earned nods on the first team, while sophomore forward Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and senior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) represented Davidson on the second team.
The last Wildcat team to place at least four players on either all-conference teams was the 1999 squad, who had five representatives on the first and second teams.
Leading the way for the Wildcats this year on defense, while also providing tremendous leadership, has been co-captain Haskell. Already a three-time all-conference honoree, Haskell capped her senior campaign off with another nod on the first team, marking the third straight year she has garnered first-team all-conference honors. Haskell was named to the second team after her freshman season.
Haskell has helped lead a stout Wildcat defense this year that has tied the school record for shutouts in a season with 10. She has provided plenty of spark on offense as well, assisting on a career-best goals this year. All six of Haskell's assists have come in Wildcat wins, and three of them have come on game-winners.
Assisting Haskell on the defense side of the field this year has been fellow classmate English, who is having a season for the record books between the pipes. The Wildcats' goalie set a school single-season and personal-best record for shutouts with 10. In addition, English has set career bests in wins (13), saves (80), goals against average (0.81) and goals allowed (15).
Besides the single season record for shutouts, English currently holds the single season mark for goals against average, while placing her name atop the career record list in total shutouts (21) and goals against average (1.08).
English and Haskell were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Second and Third teams, respectively, on Nov. 1.
On the offensive side of the field, Bye-Nagel and Sittko have been two of the best for Davidson this year. The Wildcats have found the back of the net a total of 37 times as five players have scored at least three goals, led by Bye-Nagel's team-high 12. The sophomore has had a breakout second year as her 12 scores rank second in the conference and her 25 points are third-best. Both numbers are career highs, while she also ranks first in the league with 61 shots, 35 of them on goal.
Bye-Nagel was twice named the SoCon Player of the Week as Davidson won the weekly award four times in all.
Fresh off Co-Freshman of the Year honors last season, Sittko kept her name among the conference's best with a nod on the second team this year. Despite a slow start, the sophomore finished her second year with five goals, two assists and 12 points. She was named Co-SoCon Player of the Week on Oct. 23 after scoring two goals, including a game-winner, and assisting on another score in leading Davidson to wins over College of Charleston and Western Carolina. The game-winner was one of two she has scored this season to push her career total to six.
Davidson, the host of this year's tournament, finished the regular-season with a league mark of 8-1-1 to rank second behind UNC Greensboro, who placed five players on the first team this season. The eight SoCon wins this year matched the 1999 team for second-most in a single season, while the 'Cats' 14 wins match the 1999 and 2005 teams for the most in a single season.
Davidson, seeded second, will play in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9 against third-seeded Furman at 7 p.m.
