Davidson will be seeking its fourth Southern Conference tournament title, and first since 1996, in the program's 14-year history in the SoCon when the Wildcats play host to the 2007 SoCon Women's Soccer Tournament this weekend, Nov. 9 and 11.
The second-seeded Wildcats (14-4-1) open the semifinals against third-seeded Furman (14-5-1) on Friday night at 7p.m. UNC Greensboro, seeded number one, will play fourth-seeded College of Charleston in the first game of the semifinals at 4:30.
This weekend's games can all be seen and heard on SoCon.tv on soconsports.com.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Furman leads the series 6-14-2, but Davidson has won three of the past four regular-season meetings. This year, Davidson escaped with a 1-0 win on Oct. 4 to win its sixth straight game at the time. Freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) headed in a corner kick from senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) in the ninth minute and Davidson held on the rest of the way for the 1-0 road win.
Davidson and Furman have faced each other four times in the SoCon Tournament, with the most recent meeting taking place in 2004 when the Paladins took a 3-1 decision in the finals.
SoCon Tournament History
With their 2-1 win over Wofford last Sunday in the quarterfinals, the Wildcats are now 14-9 since 1994, the first year Davidson was a part of the SoCon.
During head coach Greg Ashton's four-year tenure, the Wildcats are 4-3 and have advanced to the semifinals three of the past four years.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson enters Friday night's semifinals game against Furman riding a six-game winning streak after its 2-1 win over Wofford to open up the tournament last Sunday. The six-game win streak is the second longest on the season after rattling off an eight-game unbeaten streak earlier in the season.
The sophomore duo of Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) and Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) each scored a goal in leading the Wildcats to their win over Wofford. Bye-Nagel's goal was the eventual game-winner and her team-leading 12th of the season, which is second-most in the league.
For the season, Davidson has found the back of the net a total of 37 times as five players have scored at least three goals. Low is second behind Bye-Nagel with six goals, followed by sophomores Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with five goals apiece.
The defense has been just as good, ranking second in goals allowed in the SoCon with just 16 in 19 games. The Wildcats have tied the school record for shutouts in a season with 10, matching the 1999 and 2005 squads.
Between the posts, senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) is having a career season. She has already set career bests in wins (13), shutouts (10), saves (80), goals against average (0.81) and goals allowed (15). English set the single-season school record in shutouts and goals against average, while placing her name atop the career record list with total shutouts (21) and goals against average (1.08).
English and Haskell, who leads the team with a career-high six assists, were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Second and Third teams, respectively, on Nov. 1
Scouting the Paladins
Furman sits atop the league in nearly every offensive category in the SoCon, including goals (60), assists (48) and goals per game (3.00). The Paladins are currently riding a four-game unbeaten streak and have outscored their opponents during the streak, 18-1.
Leading the way for the Paladins is the tandem of Anne Betton and Rachel Fry. They rank first and second in the league in points with 36 (13 goals, 10 assists) and 28 (11 goals, 6 assists.), respectively. Betton paces the league in both goals and assists, while Fry is third in goals.
Emily Krankowski and Katie Tucker have also been a threat on offense, netting a combined 15 goals and assisting on nine others. Krankowski scored one of the three goals in Furman's 3-1 quarterfinals win over Appalachian State last Sunday.
In goal, Briana da Mota has started all 18 of her games. She owns a 1.04 goals against average and has pocketed 60 saves. Mota's seven shutouts are tied for third in the conference. She has fashioned a 12-5-1 record in goal this season.
A Look ahead
Should the Wildcats win their semifinal game against Furman, they would head to the championship game to face either UNC Greensboro or College of Charleston on Sunday at 1 p.m. If they would make the finals, it would mark the fifth time in program's history.
