CASHIERS, N.C. – After opening with a 297 on day one, Davidson carded a disappointing 322 Tuesday afternoon to finish 16th at the 2007 WCU Intercollegiate. The 36-hole event was played on the 6,767-yard, par 71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley layout.
For the second straight tournament, freshman Robert Mayo led the Wildcats on the individual leaderboard. The native of Austin, Texas, fired a one-under 70 on his first 18 before shooting a final round 77 to finish T-17th. Mayo's showing was his second Top-20 showing in as many outings.
Other Wildcat competitors included David Fowler (T-44 / 153), Adam Lewicki (T-57 / 156), Chris Rollins (T-80 / 164) and Michael Saari (T-82 / 165).
Tournament host Western Carolina battled the cold and winding conditions to better the field by 17 strokes and claim the team title. The Catamounts' Andres Cuenca took individual medalist honors with a 36-hole total of seven-under 135 (66-69).
Davidson will enjoy a lengthy break before opening its spring slate at the Wexford Invitational Feb. 25 and 26.
