DAVIDSON, N.C. — Riding a five-match winning streak and winners of 12 of the past 14 games, the No. 2 Davidson women's soccer team will open up Southern Conference Tournament at home as they host No. 7 Wofford on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The Matchup
For the second straight year, Davidson (13-4-1, 8-1-1 SoCon) will open up in the SoCon Tournament at home by hosting the Wofford Terriers (7-10-2, 3-6-1 SoCon) on Sunday at Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats will also host the semifinals and finals, which is the first time Davidson College has hosted the tournament since the 1996 season, the last year it won both the regular-season and tournament titles.
SoCon Tournament History
Dating back to 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, Davidson has gone 13-9 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship crown three times — 1994, '95 and '96. Last year saw the Wildcats drop a 1-0 decision to Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals.
The All-Time Series
Davidson holds an 10-3-2 all-time series mark against Wofford since the two teams first met in 1995. The Wildcats are on a four-game unbeaten streak against the Terriers.
Last Meeting vs. Wofford
Despite getting off 23 shots, including six in both overtimes, Davidson played to a 0-0 draw with Wofford on Oct. 12 in Spartanburg, S.C.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson started November just like it ended October, with yet another win as the Wildcats closed out the regular-season with a 2-0 win over Georgia Southern on Thursday, Nov. 1. The shutout gave Davidson its school-record tying 10th on the season and fourth straight time it has blanked its opponent.
Davidson's 13 wins on the season matches the 1999 team for second-most in a single season, while their eight SoCon wins also matches the 1999 team for second most in a season.
Thursday, sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) scored a goal and assisted on the other to give her five scores and two assists on the season. Fellow sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored the other goal as Davidson ran its home record to an impressive 7-1 mark.
Fresh off league player of the week honors, sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) paces the Wildcat attack with 11 goals 23 points, which both rank second in the conference. She has scored six goals in the past four games, including a perfect hat trick against Western Carolina on Oct. 21.
Senior goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) continued her record-setting senior campaign by picking up her 10th shutout of the season on Thursday, a single-season Wildcat record. She also improved to 12-4-1 between the posts, another career-best and leads the SoCon with a 0.80 goals against average.
English and fellow senior captain Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) were named to the second and third teams, respectively, on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams this past Wednesday. It marked the second straight year Haskell was named to the third team.
Scouting the Terriers
Wofford concluded its regular season with a 1-0 setback to Western Carolina, who scored the only goal in the 76th minute on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Since their last meeting vs. Davidson, the Terriers have gone just 2-4. They finished the regular season with a 3-5-1 road mark, winning their final road game at Appalachian State, 1-0.
Whitney Steelman leads Wofford with five goals and 12 points, which places her just outside the top-ten in both categories in the SoCon. Nine players in all have found the back of the net at least once as Wofford is eighth in the conference with 19 goals.
Katie McChesney has seen action between the posts in all 19 games for Wofford. She ranks third in the conference with 96 saves and is eighth with a goals against average of 1.54. In her game against the Wildcats, McChesney finished with nine saves to earn the shutout tie.
Next Up
Should the Wildcats win on Sunday, they would advance to next weekends semifinal game on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the game between third-seeded Furman (13-5-1) and sixth-seeded Appalachian State (10-5-3).
