Top-Seeded Bears End 'Cats Title Hopes

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 1-seeded California Golden Bears ended the No. 4-seeded Davidson Wildcats' title hopes with a 5-0 win in the semifinal round of the 2007 NorPac Championship on Friday afternoon at Varsity Artifical Turf Field.
California's Jennifer Crane scored two goals to lead the Bears, who improved to 12-5 and advance to tomorrow's championship game against the winner of this evening's Stanford-Radford semifinal. Davidson falls to 10-9 and will face the loser of the final semifinal in the third-place game at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Cal ousthot the 'Cats 28-5 and earned 11 penalty corners to three for the 'Cats. It was the Bears' second win over Davidson this season, including a 2-0 conference win on Sept. 13 at Belk Turf Field. The Bears also have a 2-0 record this year at Stanford, including a 4-1 non-conference victory over the Cardinal on Sept. 28.
Cal took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by junior defender Christina McGrath and sophomore forward Kellie York.
Crane scored an unassisted goal in the 45th minute and sophomore midfielder Caitlyn Byrne set up junior midfielder Gwen Belomy for the latter's second goal of the year to give Cal a 4-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Crane scored her 12th goal of the year from short range for the game's final goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christa Goeke had 12 saves in the game, while Cal's Kelly Knoche had five.
