DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior tri-captains goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) and defender Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) were both recognized for their outstanding seasons on the field as well as in the classroom by being named to the second and third teams, respectively, on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III teams. It was the eighth and ninth time a Wildcat player has earned the honor and third straight year Davidson has placed at least one player on one of the three teams.
“Bevin and Nancy represent the very best in intercollegiate athletics at Davidson College, and what great heights are attainable through hard work and commitment,” said head coach Greg Ashton. “They embody the notion of the "true scholar-athlete," and, even better, both are equally honorable and generous members of the college community beyond their two primary pursuits of school and soccer. We are so proud of them and grateful for their contributions these past four years.”
The duo have been a staple for the Wildcat defense the past four years. During their four-year careers, English and Haskell have been apart of 34 shutouts, including a school-best tying 10 in 2005 and nine this year.
English will leave Davidson as one of the best goalies in program history. A two-time Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week and All-SoCon Academic team member the past two years for her excellence on the field and in the classroom, English has started 49 of her past 50 games, including 16 this season. Majoring in biology, she has a 3.72 GPA.
Her senior year has been one for the record books as she set the all-time record for shutouts in a career when she helped blank Elon, 2-0, on Oct. 25 for her 19th shutout. In addition, English has set the record for most shutouts in a season with a SoCon-best nine this year, while moving into the top-five in career saves with 215. Her current career goals against average of 1.08 ranks first all-time in program history.
This year, English has registered career bests in saves (76), shutouts (9), goals against average (0.85), wins (11) and saves in a single game (12). In addition, she ranks first in the league in shutouts, save percentage and goals against average. English's career record between the posts is 29-14-5.
Haskell has been one of the best Wildcat and SoCon defenders in recent history. She has earned All-SoCon team honors the past three straight years, including first-team accolades twice. Haskell is also just the second Wildcat ever to earn both Soccer Buzz and NSCAA All-Region as she was named to the third-team in both during the 2006 season.
The senior defender has tallied a career-best six assists this season, with all six coming in Davidson victories, and three of them coming on game-winners. She was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Feet National Team of the Week on Sept. 25 after helping lead the Wildcats to wins over Vanderbilt and LSU.
Haskell has also excelled in the classroom, earning All-SoCon Academic honors the past two years and a spot on CoSIDA Academic All-District third team in 2006. She was last year's recipient of the A.K. Phifer Award in economics at Davidson College, the top departmental honor given annually to an economics major. Haskell has a 3.74 GPA.
For her career, Haskell has started all 78 of her games played while finding the back of the net twice and assisting on 11 other goals.
Davidson wraps up its regular season with a 7 p.m. affair tonight against Georgia Southern at Alumni Stadium as the Wildcats will honor their three seniors.
