Flink's Header Tallies Sixth Straight Win, Davidson 3-0 in SoCon Play

Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID
GREENVILLE, S.C. –– Davidson ran its winning streak to a season-high six games with a hard-fought 1-0 victory on the road against Furman in a matchup of the top-two teams in the Southern Conference on Thursday at Stone Soccer Stadium in women's soccer action. The Wildcats remained perfect in SoCon play with a 3-0 mark and ran their overall record to 7-3-0. Furman fell to 2-1 in league play, while it saw its overall mark drop to 8-4-0.
Davidson's six-game winning streak is the longest since it ran off a 14-game unbeaten streak in 2005.
Thursday evening's contest was a battle of two of the top-three teams currently in the Southern Conference with UNC Greensboro also perfect in SoCon play. The Wildcats entered play with a five-game winning streak and a perfect 2-0 SoCon mark. The Paladins had won four straight and were at 8-3 overall with a perfect 2-0 league mark as well.
Davidson wasted little time in striking first, scoring just nine minutes into the opening half. After the Wildcats were able to draw a corner kick, senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) lined up the kick and sent an arching pass into the six-yard box to freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas), who headed in her third goal to the far post at the 9:02 mark for what proved to be the winning scoring. Haskell picked up her fourth assist of 2007 and third off a corner kick.
Despite getting off only two shots, the Wildcats dominated the first half by controlling the field and ball the majority of the first 45 minutes. They also picked up all three of their corner kicks for the game in the first stanza.
After halftime, Davidson then had to weather a determined Furman team, who was on the attack most of the second half. The second period was played in a steady rain fall as the Wildcats' defense bent, but never broke. The Paladins fired off seven of their eight shots in the second half and were able to get off four of them directly on goal. Goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) though, was there for the stop on each shot, tallying five saves to register her fourth shutout of the season.
One of the Wildcats biggest defensive stops occurred in the 72nd minute. With Furman pushing the ball deep into Wildcat territory, Davidson was whistled for an obstruction in the penalty box. Furman lined up for the indirect free kick and as the Paladin player touched the ball, sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) raced out and directly blocked the shot to halt the Furman threat.
Davidson's best chance to add a second goal came in the second half with a flurry of three direct shots on goal close to the 76th minute. The ball was worked down the left side and crossed in where junior Tiffany Mumby (Houston, Texas) fired off a shot that hit the far post. Senior Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.) and Bye-Nagel each gathered in loose shots, but came up empty.
The Wildcats finished with a two-shot advantage, 10-8, while firing eight of the shots on goal.
Furman's Briana da Mota concluded the contest with a game-high seven saves.
Davidson finishes up its non-conference slate of games when it hosts Francis Marion on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
