DAVIDSON, N.C. - Senior Sam Morris and the Wildcat men's cross country squad will head to the 2007 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, hosted on the campus of Western Carolina at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.
Morris finished fourth in 2006 with the team's second-best time, as he finished in 21st place with a time of 26:12.75 in the 8K.
The team lost three of its top four runners from last year's championship squad to graduation, but return juniors Alex Hoyt and Thad Sieracki and sophomore Blake Evitt, who finished fifth, sixth and seventh for the 'Cats in 2006. Hoyt's time of 26:46.04 was good for 31st place overall, while Sieracki (26:54.66) finished a spot back at 32nd and Evitt (28:12.44) was 59th.
Entering the season with plenty of question marks due to youth and injury, the Wildcat men won the Citadel Invitational on Sept. 29, placing ahead of the nine Division I teams and ahead of all four SoCon teams in attendance, including Furman (2nd, 47 points), Western Carolina (3rd, 54), College of Charleston (4th, 86) and The Citadel (5th, 113).
Morris turned in a season-best time of 26:08.52 and finished second at the Citadel, where all but one Wildcat ran a season-best time. Freshman Charlie Schmitt and Sieracki joined Morris in the top 10 among Division I finishers. Schmitt finished seventh (13th overall) with a time of 26:43.91, and Sieracki placed ninth (18th overall) with a time of 26:54.56. The team amassed just 44 points, as Hoyt and freshman Josh Parkey finished in the top 15. Hoyt's time of 26:57.47 was good for 12th place (22nd overall), while Parkey finished 14th (25th overall) in a time of 26:59.32.
The Wildcat men also competed at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational, where they finished fourth, and the Furman Invitational, where they finished sixth.
Appalachian State won the 2006 championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., claiming its second title in two years. With six of the top 10 runners in the league this season, the Mountaineers will once again be the favorite for the crown.
