DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) became the latest Davidson women's soccer player to garner Southern Conference Player of the Week honors after earning co-honors for the week of Oct. 16-23 when she led the Wildcats to a 2-0 week. Sittko shared the weekly award with Kelly Attayek of UNC Greensboro.
Earlier this season, Sittko's fellow sophomore classmates Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) won the award on back-to-back weeks, Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, respectively. Just a year ago at this time, Sittko earned her first SoCon Player of the Week honors on Oct. 24.
The sophomore had an outstanding week as she guided the Wildcats to two SoCon wins over College of Charleston on Wednesday, Oct. 17 and then on Sunday, Oct. 21 against Western Carolina on the road. She finished the week with two goals and an assist, while kicking in the game-winner versus the Cougars. The two goals pushed her season total to three and gave her ten in her career. The game-winner was Sittko's first of the season and the fifth time in her career she has been credited with one.
Sittko started the week off by recording her second career two-goal game and netting the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime win over then first-place College of Charleston. The sophomore sent the Wildcat faithful crowd home five minutes into overtime when fellow sophomore Katherine Laco (Potomac, Md.) sent a cross from the left side into the six-yard box where a streaking near-post run by Sittko proved to be the difference maker. The sophomore forward needed only a graze off the top of her head to beat the Cougars' keeper and garner her first game-winner of the season. The overtime win was the Wildcats' fourth of the year.
Sittko put the Wildcats on the board first in the 19:58 mark of the opening half. After Davidson worked the ball to the middle of the field, senior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) sent a pass into Sittko in the 18-yard box, where the sophomore turned and struck a shot into the top corner for a 1-0 lead.
On Sunday, Sittko helped Bye-Nagel finish off a career game by assisting on the last goal of a 3-0 win against the Catamounts to give Bye-Nagel her first collegiate hat trick of her two-year career. She sent a pass into the penalty box where Bye-Nagel headed it in for the third and final goal.
The five points for the week gave Sittko seven on the season (three goals and one assist) and 24 for her career. The former Co-Freshman of the Year has played in all 15 games this season for Davidson (10-4-1, 5-1-1 SoCon), while starting 12 of them.
Davidson will play host to Elon on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. as it looks to improve on its two-game winning streak and 5-1 record at Alumni Stadium.
