The Pioneer Football League announced today that Davidson linebacker Bud Crawford and kicker Cody Elder have earned Player of the Week honors for their performance in the Wildcats' 24-21 victory over Drake last Saturday.
Crawford was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week after collecting a career-high three sacks, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble. The senior finished the game with five solo tackles and led a defense that allowed the Bulldogs minus 40 yards rushing. It was the second time Crawford has won the award in his career, and he joins junior Matt Easton as the only Wildcats to earn the honor this season.
Elder was named Special Teams Player of the Week after booting the game-winning field goal from 20 yards out with 1:24 left in the game. The senior added a 37-yarder, the longest of his career, in the second quarter and averaged 39.8 yards in five punts, placing three inside the 20-yard line. It's the first time Elder has earned the accolade.
It was Davidson's first victory over Drake, and the 'Cats tied an NCAA Division I record (FCS or FBS) with three safeties in the game. Alabama State had three against Albany St. (Ga.) Oct. 15, 1988, the only other time it has happened in FCS history.
The Wildcats play their next two games on the road, beginning with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Butler Oct. 27.
