Bye-Nagel's Hat Trick Paces Wildcats to 3-0 Win at Western Carolina
10/21/2007 6:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID
DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) continued her solid second season for the women's soccer team by registering her first-ever collegiate hat trick in leading the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-0 blanking of the Western Carolina Catamounts on Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Southern Conference action.
The win marked the Wildcats' eighth in the past 11 games as they improved to 10-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in league play. It's the third straight year Davidson has hit the 10-win plateau in a season. For Western Carolina, it falls back to .500 at 8-8-1 overall and sees its league mark drop to 3-4-1.
Bye-Nagel, who had been held scoreless the past three games, broke out with three goals on Sunday to push her team-best total to eight on the year. All eight of her career goals have come during her sophomore campaign.
The forward was not alone on the day in guiding the Wildcats to their sixth shutout win of the year. Picking up her second assist on the season was sophomore Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), while the sophomore duo of Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Courtney Hart (Ashland, Mass.) tallied their first assists of the season.
Davidson wasted no time in grabbing a 1-0 lead when it struck just 1:48 into the match. Bye-Nagel gathered a long pass from Hart and put her shot in the lower-right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
The sophomore forward found the back of the net for the second time just 12 minutes later. She took a give-and-go with Conner that slipped past WCU goalkeeper Caitlin Williams and finished off the play with a strike into the open net.
Bye-Nagel capped off her career day and the Wildcats' win when 13 minutes into the second half, she knocked in a header from four yards out to close out the scoring at 3-0. Sittko set up the final goal to give her seven points (three goals, one assist) on the season.
Despite getting outshot 11-7, Davidson was very efficient with its shots. The Wildcats placed four shots on goal and found the back of the net on the other three shots.
Senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) picked up five saves on the afternoon and earned her SoCon-best seventh shutout.
Davidson ran its all-time series record against the Catamounts to 7-2-1 and have won five straight regular-season matches against them dating back to 2003 season.
Davidson returns home for its second to last home contest when the Wildcats play host to Elon on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
