On Saturday, October 6th, the Davidson women's lacrosse team took a break from fall practice for a morning to participate in the 24th Anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure to benefit breast cancer research.
The 'Cats got an early start, heading to Uptown Charlotte at 6:30am to arrive and register for the 8am 5K jog/walk.
"Prerun jitters gave way to a strong sense of pride and community as Davidson Lax stepped up to the Komen Race for the Cure starting line," said senior Anna Mitchell. "It was nothing less than inspirational to run alongside cancer survivors. It was even more encouraging that I could share this experience with my favorite girls on campus: my teammates."
Senior Sarah Walter added, "I was in awe by the shear amount of people constantly surrounding me. It was amazing to see so many people who did not know one another to unite around a common and important cause. It was also very cool to see so many people of all different ages physically running the same course. It made me aware that everyone, regardless of their place in life, can be greatly affected by breast cancer and the illness it brings."
The 2007 Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure was our best Race ever, according to the Komencharlotte.org website. The race had over 12,700 participants, and raised an estimated 1.2 million dollars.
According to the website, 75 percent of the net proceeds remain in the local service area to support education, screening and treatment. This insures that local contributions has a direct and positive impact on their local community. The remaining 25 percent is combined with the proceeds of over 100 Komen Affiliates around the country to fund a National Research Grant Program.
