DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After having its eight-game unbeaten streak halted last Sunday, the Davidson women's soccer team will be seeking to start a new winning streak when they play host to College of Charleston on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Davidson looks to snap the Cougars' six-game unbeaten streak as CofC sits on top of the Southern Conference standings with a 5-0-1 mark.
The Matchup
Davidson (8-4-1, 3-1-1 SoCon), who is coming off a tie and loss last week, finishes its two-game homestand with a 5 p.m. contest at Alumni Stadium against the College of Charleston Cougars (8-5-1, 5-0-1 SoCon). The 'Cats sport a 4-1 mark at home this year.
The All-Time Series
Sophomore Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) picked up her third game-winning goal last year when she found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to send the Davidson to a 1-0 win at Charleston and improve the all-time series to 8-3 in favor of the Wildcats. The two teams first met during the 1993 campaign when Davidson took an 8-0 decision on Sept. 5, 1993.
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wildcats are coming off a 3-0 home loss at the hands of UNC Greensboro on Sunday, which stopped their longest unbeaten streak since the 2005 squad rattle off a 14-game streak. Despite getting off 13 shots, eight of them in the second half, Davidson never was able to break through. The Spartan defense had a hard time covering sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) as she struck for eight shots in the game. She got off three shots, two of them directly on goal in the first ten minutes of the game, and then in the second half, nearly missed a near post shot in the 59th minute. Bye-Nagel also picked up another direct shot on goal in the 76th minute, but was never able to get one to find the back of the net.
The sophomore along with Lauren Conner continue to pace the Wildcat attack with five goals apiece. Fellow sophomore Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) are next with four and three goals, respectively.
Davidson ranks just ahead of Charleston in goals with 22, which places the Wildcats fourth in the league. They also rank third with a 1.69 goals per game average on an average of 13 shots per contest.
Goalie Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) moved up the career shutout chart after a 0-0 tie with Wofford last week, giving her six on the year, tops in the SoCon, and 17 overall, putting her third all-time. The senior tri-captain comes into Wednesday's contest with the fifth most saves in league play at 63 and is 6th with a 1.05 goals against average.
Scouting the Cougars
Charleston, which downed Western Carolina and The Citadel last week, is tied for second in the league with seven shutouts, including five in a row before its 4-1 win at The Citadel on Sunday. The Cougars have outscored their opponents 12-1 during their six-game unbeaten streak.
Megan Manthey led the scoring attack for the Cougars last week and owns a 1.0 shot percentage for the last two games. The junior midfielder scored a goal in each match and added an assist in Charleston's 2-0 win over Western Carolina last Thursday. On the season, Manthey is tied for the team-lead with three goals. Brittany Schneider leads the Cougars overall with nine points on two goals and five assists.
