DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Senior Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) became the fourth women's soccer player to garner an individual award after earning back-to-back shutout wins in goal last week as she was honored by the Southern Conference as its Student-Athlete of the Week for October 10. It's the second such award that English has won, after picking up the academic honor last year.
The Wildcat goalie also excels in the classroom too. English is majoring in biology and carries a 3.74 GPA. The past two years she has been named to the All-SoCon All-Academic team.
The senior led the Wildcats to another 2-0 week as she picked up shutout wins in a 1-0 decision at Furman on Thursday in SoCon action and then a 4-0 victory against Francis Marion on Sunday. English registered a combined 11 saves in the two wins to push her season total to 56, good for fifth most in the league.
Thursday saw Davidson break up a three-way tie for first place in the SoCon with a big win over rival Furman to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Paladins last year. After taking a 1-0 lead early in the first half, Davidson had to weather a determined Furman team, who was on the attack most of the second half. The second period was played in a steady rain as the Wildcats' defense bent, but never broke. The Paladins fired off seven of their eight shots in the second half and were able to get off four directly on goal. But English was there for the stop on each shot, tallying five saves to register her fourth shutout of the season.
In the program's first win against Francis Marion on Sunday, the Wildcat offense took care of business with four goals, but early on, English was needed to hold the Patriots in check. With Davidson leading 1-0, Taylor Jenkins of the Patriots almost knotted things up about five minutes later. FMU worked the ball down the far side of the field where Jenkins received a cross in the six-yard box, turned and fired a shot on the near post. English though, laid out to swat the shot away and halt the Patriot attack.
The senior tri-captain finished the contest with six saves and pushed her career shutout total to 16, tying her with Sarah Hobart for third place all-time.
English leads the SoCon with five shutouts and her 0.97 goals against average places her fourth in the league.
Davidson has two SoCon games this week as the Wildcats head to Wofford on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then play host to UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a matchup of the top-two teams currently in the league standings.
