DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Junior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) of the Davidson College women's soccer team added yet another postseason honor to her list as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America named Haskell to its All-Region Third Team following an outstanding junior campaign. Haskell became just the second Wildcat ever to be named to one of the three teams and the second straight after Kara Koehrn earned third team honors in 2005.
The junior tri-captain joined some formidable selections, including 16 Atlantic Coast Conference athletes with five of them coming from the 2006 National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels. Shannon Donovan of UNC Greensboro joined Haskell as the only two players of the Southern Conference to be recognized among the 2006 selections.
"A fierce competitor whose passion for the game is contagious, Nancy embodies the spirit of Davidson soccer," said head coach Greg Ashton. "She is a leader on the field and off, and being honored with a nod on one of the NSCAA all-region teams, really shows the respect other coaches have of her and how hard she has worked on the field."
The junior previously was named to the All-SoCon First Team on defense for the second straight year and became the seventh women's soccer player, and second straight, to earn a nod on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Third Team
Haskell has been a steady force on the defensive side of the ball since her arrival as a freshman in 2004. The three-time All-SoCon honoree has started in every game she has played and was one of only four players this season to start all 20 games for Davidson.
This season the junior helped guide a Wildcat defense to nine shutout wins, while allowing only 18 goals on the year. Besides her great defensive presence, Haskell recorded her second career goal this season and assisted on two others. The one goal she scored this year was her first career game-winner in a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern.
As a freshman, Haskell was named to the All-SoCon Second Team as a defender after starting all 22 games and helping the Wildcats to a 12-9-1 overall mark. In her sophomore campaign, Haskell was a key part of a Wildcat defense that tied a school record with 10 shutouts and had the school's first-ever undefeated season in league action at 9-0-1. For her efforts, Haskell made the league's first team.
Davidson concluded the year with an overall mark of 11-7-2 after suffering a 1-0 setback in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. The Wildcats, who were projected to finish fifth in the preseason poll, finished second overall in the regular season with a 7-3 record, just behind UNC Greensboro who was 9-0-1.
