DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Sports Network released its 2006 I-AA Mid-Major All-America Football Team yesterday, and Davidson place kicker Brad Smith represented Davidson College on the squad. He is the fourth Wildcat in the past five years to be selected for the team.
The Sports Network also released its final I-AA Mid-Major Poll with Davidson ending the season ranked eighth. It marks the first ranking at the end of the season for the Wildcats (6-4) since their last winning season in 2002 when they were 7-3 and were ranked sixth.
Smith was one of the most accurate kickers in Division I, connecting on 11 of his 12 field goal attempts -- the lone miss being from 50 yards -- and 30-of-32 PAT tries. The senior from Danville, Pa., led the Pioneer Football League in total field goals and field goal percentage (91.7), plus was the highest-scoring kicker in the league with 63 points. His field goal percentage was also eighth among all Division I kickers.
On Sept. 9 against Wingate, Smith nailed all three of his field goal attempts, equaling the school record which he already shared with five other Wildcats. His 39-yard field goal as time expired on Oct. 14 gave Davidson a 27-24 victory, the team's first ever at Morehead State. Smith's 11 field goals also tied the school single-season record, and he finished his career eighth on Davidson's all-time scoring list with 133 points.
Other Wildcats to be a Sports Network Mid-Major All-America are tight end Mike Chase (2002), defensive lineman Darryl Childers (2003) and linebacker Alex Arinsmier (2005).
