DAVIDSON, N.C. - For her record-setting performance at the UNC Fast Times over the weekend, junior Brenna Burns was named Co-Southern Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week as well as TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 31, announced earlier today by the league office.
Burns, a junior from Weaverville, N.C., finished first and set a new Davidson record in the 3000 meters at the meet, hosted on the campus of North Carolina. Edging Campbell's NCAA cross country qualifier Alicia Valtin by two seconds, Burns claimed the individual title in 9:53.37, shattering the previous Wildcat standard of 10:08.62 set last season by Megal Atias.
Burns shares Athlete of the Week honors with Western Carolina's Raquel Ramseur, who placed first in the 400-meters and third in the 200-meters at the Niswonger Invitational last weekend.
The TIAA-CREF SoCon Athlete of the Week boasts a 3.979 GPA in the classroom. A psychology major, Burns is also a member of the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team.
The pair of honors is the first this season for Burns, who was a four-time cross country Runner of the Week and September Runner of the Month in 2005. The All-SoCon performer also previously received the TIAA-CREF student-athlete honor once during the 2005 cross country season.
