STATESBORO, Ga. — Freshman Emily King turned in Davidson's top performance on the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track Championship in Statesboro, Ga., claiming the women's 10,000-meter title with a school-record time of 38:04.10.
Midway through the conference meet, Appalachian State leads both the men's and women's team contests, while the Davidson women currently stand in seventh out of 10 teams.
King's 10K time trumped the old Wildcat best of 38:53.44, set in 1995, by nearly 50 seconds. She was joined in the event by classmate Lucy Rogers, who earned points for Davidson with an eighth-place finish.
Meanwhile, junior Jessica Chasen set a school record in the 400 meters with a time of 58.31 in today's preliminaries, qualifying herself for tomorrow's finals. Chasen's mark replaced the former Wildcat standard of 58.47, set in 1999. Also earning a spot in the finals tomorrow was sophomore Katurri Phillips, who edged out her own 200-meter school record of 25.61 with a preliminary time of 25.60.
Competition resumes Sunday on the campus of Georgia Southern with the SoCon title up for grabs.
