CLEMSON, S.C. — Davidson sophomore Megal Atias led the Wildcat women with a fourth-place finish in the 3000 meters, clocking a school-record time of 10:11.6 on the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship in Clemson, S.C., on Friday.
Atias was followed in the event by freshmen Caroline Sanker and Emily King in seventh and eighth, respectively. Sanker's time of 10:13.7 was also faster than the previous Wildcat standard of 10:16.5 set by standout Kathy Beach in 1992, and the freshman's mark was good enough to qualify her for the USA Junior Nationals.
“It was a banner day for the girls with school records falling like flies,” Davidson head coach Jen Straub said at the end of day one.
The women's distance medley relay team of Atias, sophomore Colleen McKown, and seniors Hilary Leister and Allie Martin blew away the old school record of 12:45.16 with a fifth-place performance of 12:31.64. In addition, freshman Kim Colley set new Wildcat standards in the 60 meters (8.04) and the 200 meters (26.43), while junior Jessica Chasen charted a new record in the 400 meters with a time of 60.38.
For the men, senior Jonathan Baker paced Davidson with a seventh-place finish in the 3000 meters, crossing the line at 8:45.14. Classmate Austin Mercadante and freshman Lance Harden followed in ninth and 10th, respectively, just outside earning points for the team.
Competition continues with events on Saturday, the second and final day of the indoor championship.
