DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Junior defender Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) represented Davidson as she became the third straight Wildcat to earn a nod on the All-State Women's Soccer Team as announced by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association today. Kara Koehrn had been named to the all-state team the past two years.
It was the junior's fourth postseason award as she previously was named to the All-SoCon First Team on defense for the second straight year, then became the seventh women's soccer player, and second straight, to earn a nod on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Third Team, and just recently, was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Third Team following an outstanding junior campaign. Haskell became just the second Wildcat ever to be named to one of the three teams and the second straight after Kara Koehrn earned third team honors in 2005.
The junior tri-captain joined four other Southern Conference players to help make up the 11-member all-state team. Charlotte and UNC Greensboro each placed three players, while UNC Wilmington was next with two players each.
The team consists of NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. Nominees are submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and then NCCSIA members vote for the
all-state team.
This season Haskell helped guide a Wildcat defense to nine shutout wins, while allowing only 18 goals on the year. Besides her great defensive presence, Haskell recorded her second career goal this season and assisted on two others. The one goal she scored this year was her first career game-winner in a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern.
Haskell has been a steady force on the defensive side of the ball since her arrival as a freshman in 2004. The three-time All-SoCon honoree has started in every game she has played and was one of only four players this season to start all 20 games for Davidson.
As a freshman, Haskell was named to the All-SoCon Second Team as a defender after starting all 22 games and helping the Wildcats to a 12-9-1 overall mark. In her sophomore campaign, Haskell was a key part of a Wildcat defense that tied a school record with 10 shutouts and had the school's first-ever undefeated season in league action at 9-0-1. For her efforts, Haskell made the league's first team.
Davidson concluded the year with an overall mark of 11-7-2 after suffering a 1-0 setback in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. The Wildcats, who were projected to finish fifth in the preseason poll, finished second overall in the regular season with a 7-3 record, just behind UNC Greensboro who was 9-0-1.
