Allen Simms enters his third season as the assistant men's track and field and cross country coach at Davidson, coaching the sprints, hurdles and jumps.
An accomplished performer in both the long and triple jumps, in both the collegiate and professional settings, Simms has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the men's staff.
Under his tutelage, Taylor Martin earned All-Southern Conference honors in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2010 outdoor conference championships, while Bryce Jones set a new school record in the pole vault. Several of his sprinters have populated the Davidson’s Top 10 all-time lists.
Identified as one of the best up-and-coming coaches within the North America, Central America and Caribbean region, Simms was invited to participate in a highly selective jumps coaching course by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the world governing body for track and field. Simms completed the IAAF’s Level III Jumps Course at the NACAC/IAAF’s Regional Development Centre in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the fall of 2009.
At the 2008 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., Simms finished in sixth place overall in the triple jump, just four inches short of making the USA Olympic team. He finished the season ranked fifth nationally.
In 2007, while competing for Puerto Rico, he was national champion in the triple jump and ranked 15th in the world. That year, with a best jump of 56 ft. 2 inches, he qualified for the World Championships and the Olympics with an "A" standard. Simms met the “A” standard in 2004 also, and he participated in the 2003 and 2005 World Outdoor Championships and the 2004 and 2006 World Indoor Championships. In 2004, he was the USA Indoor Champion in the triple jump.
As a collegian, he was the NCAA runner-up at the Outdoor championships in 2005 in the triple jump and the individual champion at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2003.
Over the course of his collegiate career, he was a seven-time All-American in the long and triple jumps, and in 2003 he was the PAC-10 record holder in the triple jump, PAC-10 Newcomer of the Year, the NCAA West Region Field Event Athlete of the Year and set the University of Southern California's school record in the triple jump.
Simms served as a volunteer, working with jumpers at George Mason University in 2006 and at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2007.
His extensive coaching experience also includes stops at The Cannon School (Concord, N.C.), Mercury Speed Unlimited, Inc. (Leesburg, Va.), Special Forces Track Club (Loudon County, Va.), Heritage High School (Leesburg, Va.), Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Greenbelt, Md.) and Gleneden Track and Field.
Simms received his B.A. from the University of Southern California in 2005. He is IAAF Level III jumps certified.
