2020 aCATemy Awards -Community Involvement
Community Involvement Award Nominees
Alana Davidson, Women's Basketball
-Established hospice care services for elderly and disabled patients by observing and documenting patient condition, progress and medication schedule while providing emotional aid to patients and their family members. She served 50 hours per semester doing this and has completed 200+ total hours of services.
-Founded Students for Serenity House, which is a campus organization to focus on increasing visibility of of volunteer opportunities at Serenity House for Davidson students interested in gaining experience with patient care. She organized a series of on-campus educational session monthly to improve knowledge and understanding of hospice care led by Serenity House and other end-of-life care managers.
-She also just started training to be a crisis counselor for the crisis text line, which focuses on providing confidential crisis intervention via text message.
George Hatalowich, Football
-Organized the Davidson chapter of the Lift for Life and awarded best new chapter.
-He was named to the All-State Good Hands team which recognizes the best student-athletes around the country for their community service.
-George also was named to the New Hampshire Honor Society for academic achievement.
-George also finished his career as a two-time team captain, 1st Team All-PFL Academic Team and 2nd Team All-PFL.
Gretchen Pearson, Women's Soccer
-The junior captain has been an influential player on the field over the past few years, compiling over 4,000 minutes, and is one of the most established contributors on the team.
-Off the field, she started the Davidson College chapter of Coaches Across Continents, an organization that raises money for a girls’ soccer team in Colombia with the goal of promoting female equality and empowerment, and currently presides as the fundraising chair. So far, she has helped raise over $5,000 to give to empower girls around the world in their pursuit of excellence on and off the soccer field.
-She also helps lead a Women’s Leadership Club on campus and volunteers in youth ministry at a church in the Davidson area. Although she carries the weight of tremendous responsibility in multiple settings, she does so with the personal work ethic of a leader and the service of one committed to bettering those around her.
-She is an incredible example of the liberal arts education: an education that not only builds intelligent contributors in academia but also productive citizens who make the world, practically, a better place. Gretchen combines intellectual acuity with the warmth of interpersonal skills, all while focusing on helping people around her have a more fulfilling experience in life.
